Conditions Treated

You're likely wondering...

"Why am I having this health condition in the first place?

Functional medicine works across a wide range of conditions because it focuses on restoring health at its source. It supports people seeking to improve overall wellness and prevent disease, as well as those managing chronic illness or taking multiple medications.

Its clinical approach centers on identifying the root causes of symptoms by asking questions such as “Why did this start?” “Why now?” and “What factors are contributing?” Potential drivers include nutrient imbalances, hormonal disruption, metabolic dysfunction, gut issues, environmental toxins, poor sleep, chronic stress, suboptimal diet, inadequate or excessive exercise, chronic infections, or a combination of these. Two people may share the same diagnosis, yet the underlying causes can be entirely different.

Every patient working with Dr. Petrik receives an individualized treatment plan tailored to their unique triggers and physiology. This personalized approach is what makes functional medicine effective across such a broad spectrum of conditions.

Our holistic Approach

We work with you to determine the root cause rather than just treat your symptoms.

Functional medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of illness rather than simply treating symptoms. It uses an individualized, science-based approach that examines each patient’s environmental, biochemical, and lifestyle factors to create personalized treatment plans.

By targeting underlying drivers, practitioners often find that a single condition may have many different causes and that one root cause can lead to many different conditions. This approach allows treatment to be tailored to the specific ways disease shows up in each individual.

Preventitive Care

Health exists on a spectrum, and you do not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from working with a physician. Many people assume they are healthy simply because they have not been labeled with a disease, but this is an outdated way of thinking. Ideally, patients seek care because they want to feel better, function at a higher level, and live their best life. People are often surprised to discover how much better they can feel once underlying issues are addressed.

Improved sleep

Improved focus

Improved ability to handle stress

Increased physical performance

Gastrointestinal Disorders

Hippocrates famously said that “all disease begins in the gut,” and modern research continues to show how true this is. Many foundational systems depend on a healthy gastrointestinal tract to function well. For example, roughly 80 percent of the immune system resides in the gut, and up to 90 percent of serotonin is produced there. When gut health is compromised, it can worsen or complicate other conditions, including mental health disorders, immune dysregulation, and hormonal imbalances. Because nutrient absorption also occurs in the gut, inflammation or dysfunction can prevent key vitamins and minerals from being properly absorbed and used, which affects essential biochemical processes throughout the body.

For this reason, nearly all Arkum Medical patients receive a thorough gastrointestinal evaluation. Common assessments may include stool analysis, breath testing, and organic acid profiling. Since the gut interacts with multiple other systems, most functional evaluations and treatment plans are anchored in restoring gut health. When the gut is not functioning well, it becomes much harder to achieve wellness in other areas of the body.

Skin Conditions

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it often provides important clues about internal health. Because of this connection, treating skin concerns frequently involves uncovering and addressing underlying inflammation, imbalances, and nutrient deficiencies.

Effective treatment begins with evaluating hydration, gut health, hormone balance, nutrition, stress levels, and sleep habits, since each of these plays a foundational role in skin function and overall wellness.

Eczema

Psoriasis

Dermatitis

Allergies

Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune diseases now affect roughly 1 in 12 people in the United States, making them one of the fastest‑growing groups of chronic conditions. The immune system is deeply interconnected with mental health, hormone balance, cardiovascular function, and the body’s ability to grow and repair. In autoimmune illness, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues because it can no longer distinguish self from non‑self. Factors that may increase susceptibility include dysbiosis, heavy metals, chronic infections, environmental toxins, nutrient deficiencies, and endocrine‑disrupting chemicals.

Because immune dysregulation can arise from many different sources, treatment must be individualized. The goal is to identify and remove the triggers that are overstimulating the immune system. In many cases, multiple factors are involved, which is why a systems‑biology approach is essential for effective care.

Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism

Lupus

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Psoriasis

Sjogren’s Syndrome

Cardiovascular And Metabolic Disease

Cardiovascular risk reduction focuses on lowering inflammation and improving metabolic health, using key biomarkers such as insulin, hs‑CRP, HbA1c, homocysteine, and uric acid to assess cardivascular status and arterial wall inflammation. These markers help stratify risk and guide a more precise understanding of what is driving cardiovascular strain.

Treatment centers on lifestyle strategies that reduce inflammation, including nutrition plans, stress management, and identifying and resolving underlying contributors. This may involve evaluating gut health, toxin exposure, and hormone balance to address the root causes that elevate cardiovascular risk.

Hypertension

Hyperlipidemia

Sleep Apnea

Metabolic Syndrome

Heart Disease

Diabetes

Endocrine And Hormonal Disease

Hormone‑producing organs such as the pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, testes, and adrenals release hormones that regulate essential functions including metabolism and reproduction. The central nervous system, through the hypothalamus and pituitary, signals these organs when to secrete hormones, creating a chain of communication that begins in the brain and ends at the target cell where the hormone acts. Imbalances in hormone production, transport, sensitivity, or detoxification can all lead to symptoms of hormone dysregulation. Each step in this chain is evaluated for gaps or disruptions, and treatment focuses on restoring balance throughout the system. This requires a systematic approach rather than immediately turning to hormone therapy. Hormone therapy may be used when appropriate, but it is considered only after foundational issues have been addressed.

Mental Health Disorders

Almost everyone we see reports some degree of difficulty sleeping, anxiety, or depression, which aligns with national data showing that about one in five adults experiences at least one of these conditions. These issues reflect disruptions in brain health, so the evaluation begins with factors that influence brain function, including nutrition, physical activity, environmental toxins, spiritual well‑being, genetic predispositions, vitamin and mineral status, gut health, and interpersonal relationships.

Because so many factors can contribute to mental health symptoms, it is common for people to be offered medication to address the immediate concern, and many individuals benefit greatly from these treatments, especially those with severe depression. However, not everyone responds to antidepressants, and decisions about starting or tapering medication should always be made with a healthcare provider.

A functional approach includes assessing gut health, adrenal function, thyroid disorders, and nutrient deficiencies, along with a detailed review of lifestyle and dietary patterns to reduce inflammation and stabilize mood and blood sugar. A comprehensive, multi‑layered strategy is essential for supporting long‑term brain health.
